About
This website was developed by reflecting on what was learned from the results of two different research studies that explored detransition/retransition and other non-linear gender transitions—the Re/DeTrans Canada study led by Dr. Kinnon R. MacKinnon and the Detrans Discourses project led by Dr. Annie Pullen Sansfaçon. Both studies were funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
Our process of developing content for this website was multi-staged and involved significant stakeholder engagement. It began with a Detransition Symposium and community event held in November 2022 at York University. At this symposium, results from the two research studies were presented and discussed with stakeholders such as detrans, nonbinary, trans, and queer people, their friends and families, gender care providers, and 2SLGBTQ+ program developers and educators. A stakeholder engagement committee comprising 10 individuals from each of these stakeholder groups was also involved in guiding this project. The content for the website was iteratively produced by analyzing feedback and discussion notes collected at the symposium, through conversations had with the advisory committee, and by soliciting feedback from several detransitioners, and a parent of someone who has detransitioned.
We express gratitude to SSHRC for funding the development of this resource, and to our multidisciplinary team. Our project team includes collaborators who study 2SLGBTQ+ health and social care issues: Drs. Kinnon R. MacKinnon (Assistant Professor, School of Social Work, York University), Annie Pullen Sansfaçon (Professor, School of Social Work, Université de Montréal),), Lori E. Ross (Associate Professor, Social and Behavioral Health Sciences Division of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto), Hannah Kia (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Social Work, The University of British Columbia), June S.H. Lam (Psychiatrist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health), Florence A. Paré (Assistant Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Alberta), Mélanie Millette (Associate Professor, Department of Social and Public Communication at Université du Québec à Montréal), Olivier Turbide, (Professor, Department of Social and Public Communication, Université du Québec à Montréal). Finally, Morgane Gelly (Senior Research Advisor, School of Social Work, Université de Montréal) and Wren A. Gould (PhD student, Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto) made significant contributions to developing the website content.
